It had been a poor week for Tottenham Hotspur as we headed into last weekend’s clash with Southampton and manager Mauricio Pochettino saw his first team squad battle hard to take a confidence boosting three points. It set us up nicely for this evening’s Champions League action as we hosted German side Bayern Munich at White Hart Lane.
Fans knew it would be another tough encounter, but we were hoping to see the Spurs we knew and loved and if we did, three points in the Group B encounter on home soil was certainly not beyond us.
It was a bright enough start and both sides were largely matched going into the halftime break. Sonny had given us the lead 12 minutes in, but three minutes later the visitors had levelled and unfortunately for us, they took advantage on the stroke of halftime to take a 2-1 lead.
Within ten minutes of the restart they’d taken a 4-1 advantage as Serge Gnabry helped himself to a brace inside of three minutes, and, oh well.
Just after the hour mark, Harry Kane restored some hope as he converted from 12 yards to make it 4-2, but the final ten minutes of the tie were something from the Exorcist as we conceded a further three quick goals to make it 7-2.
Well, that was a bit humbling.
Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, I’m slightly amazed Poch could speak.
“I don’t need too much time to explain. We played 30 mins well, started well, pressing high. But we were unlucky that we conceded in the first minute of the half. They were very clinical. After we scored the penalty for two we had chances to score the third. But from the 83rd and 88th minute we conceded three more goals. In football it can happen. Every single touch went in. We are very disappointed and very upset but we have to stay together. I think we are strong in our mentality. Maybe you are bored about my speech but football is today not yesterday. It is always is about the show. You have to do it today and tomorrow. It is not about experiences and what happened three months ago. We are disappointed. Every single touch from Bayern was clinical. They scored with every touch. It is tough to accept. You have to move on. This type of situation you have to face. It is tough and you need to be strong and keep going. Stay together, help each other and be all together. When you receive this type of result it is important to bounce back and believe in yourself. It is the only way to recover.”
